Things to do in the Cinque Terre

Trails from Volastra, villages and ideas for planning your stay.

What can you do in the Cinque Terre if you enjoy walking? Split your time between village visits and paths through terraced vineyards and dry-stone walls. Volastra, in the hills of Riomaggiore, is a base to consider for a walking holiday. This guide suggests ways to plan two or three days, explains the main trail connections and links to official information.

01

Why stay in Volastra for a walking holiday

Volastra offers a hillside perspective on the Cinque Terre. Trail 506 passes through the village, while trail 586 starts here and heads towards Case Pianca. These connections let you plan different walking days through the vineyard landscape.

A hillside base suits visitors who want to spend time on the trails and in a village. Plan your return as carefully as your outward walk: descending to the coast means either climbing back or choosing an available connection. You do not need to see all five villages in one day.

02

Walking between Manarola and Volastra on trail 506

Trail 506 runs from Manarola through Volastra and continues inland towards Sella di Monte Marvede. Check the official Park description for the section you intend to walk. Figures for the complete route are not the distance, ascent or walking time of the Manarola–Volastra section alone.

Combine your chosen walk with time in Manarola. Decide on direction, elevation change and the return journey before setting out. Leave room to enjoy the village rather than treating it as a brief stop between trails.

03

From Volastra towards Corniglia through the vineyards

Trail 586 connects Volastra with Case Pianca and meets trail 587. Together, these links form an option to research for a walk towards Corniglia through the terraced-vineyard landscape, followed by a village visit.

Completing the walk depends on all the relevant sections being open. Check the Park’s current trail network and signs on the ground. A travel article does not confirm access on the day; do not use unofficial detours to get around a closure.

04

Ideas for two or three days in the Cinque Terre

For two days, consider one day around Volastra and Manarola and another towards Corniglia, choosing open routes that match your experience. Allow time for village streets, breaks and the return journey, rather than filling every hour with walking.

With a third day, add Riomaggiore, Vernazza or Monterosso. Combine a village visit with a permitted walk or use a train connection from the coast. These are planning ideas, not a requirement to complete the whole trip on foot. Change plans if weather or closures make a route unsuitable.

05

Before setting off

Check trail access, weather, difficulty and elevation on the Park website. Wear suitable hiking shoes, carry water and choose a walk that fits your experience and the available daylight. Stairways and steep connecting paths are different from a village stroll.

For regulated routes, check current Cinque Terre Card terms and prices with the Park. Rules and included services differ by route and card. Verify any reservations or restrictions for your travel dates rather than relying on permanent-looking prices or opening claims.
